A voyage through time, evolution and the kingdoms of life towards the natural destruction wrought upon the planet by the human species. Exploring geological epochs and kingdoms of life, Realms voyages through deep time from the primeval ocean to a post-human future. The film employs visual storytelling, seeking to replace the anthropocentric worldview with greater attention to the complex interrelationships and dependencies between organisms, and between animate and inanimate nature.

Jury Statement :
A celebration of the beautiness of life which is disappearing in front of our eyes. Creating a unique and genuine causality "Realms" is a purely visual description of our paradise lost.

Loosely based on Dante’s Divine Comedy, The Divine Way takes the viewer into the protagonist’s epic descent through an endless labyrinth of staircases. As the woman journey deeper, the staircases transform and she is trapped and pulled into their dangerous landscape.

Jury Statement :
Special mention for creating a hypnotical effect evocating metaphysical Inferno by Dante.

Director Statement :
The Divine Way follows the epic descent of a woman through an endless labyrinth of staircases. As in life, in this film every new step is exciting, full of curiosity and fear. We are all wandering and seeking for ourselves. No one knows what is the right way and we often find ourselves lost in the middle of our life path. The film depicts the mystical path of life’s journey, which sometimes pushes us into total darkness, in order to see where the light truly comes from. Thank you very much for the award and to have screened our film at 17th Festival international Signes de Nuit.

In the Tibetan Book of the Dead, Bardo is the intermediate state between death and rebirth in which the deceased experiences visions of one's previous life before being reborn.

Jury Statement :
Audiovisual stream inspired by the Tibetian book of the Dead, this film expresses a passage between death and reborn in perfect harmony between the pictures and the music. "Bardo" creates a cinematic movement that brings the audience in a state of great serenity.

Director Statement :
Signes de Nuit means a lot to me as a filmgoer and as a filmmaker. Back in 2014, I attended the festival for the first and met a young British director named Nichola Wong who inspired me so much I had to grab a camera to shoot my own movies. For the following years, everytime I was shooting an experimental video, a music video or event just a live concert, I was thinking that if I ever was to finish a film, I'd like to screen it at Signes de Nuit. And now, I'm getting an award from this festival. I never thought an experimental recollection of my life would ever be award-worthy but I'm incredibly glad this festival thought otherwise! Thanks a lot to the festival team for having me, thanks to everyone who came on the screening day and shared their thoughts with me even though there weren't any single face I know and huge thanks to the Jury and especially to the legendary Michèle Levieux for her inspirationnal and encouraging words about the film. I don't know what's coming next but "Bardo" shall live on!

Inspired by both Italian Renaissance paintings and contemporary news broadcasts from Gaza protests at the border with Israel - the work processes human gestures and figures in landscape into a dark and colourful scramble. The work aims to open up an array of reflections, including concerns about the political image, image of the political, the politics of the image, and the image of image.

Jury Statement :

2018 | 00:22:00

It rained non-stop when Hong Kong was rocked by the tumultuous events in October 2014. At the university hall, young souls are assigned to different rooms amid the sounds of rain, studies and heavy discussions. These strangers come from a variety of backgrounds but are united by their passion towards the society. They may have dissenting opinions, but will learn to accept and be sympathetic to each other. The rainy night feels especially ominous when the students ponder at the events in Mong Kok.

Jury Statement :
In one accurate composition "The Umbrella" creates three parallel theatre-like stages. This distant approach subtly linked by the symbol of an umbrella makes us think in wider perspective about both, political and social means of freedom.

A Russian can say, “I hear the smell…” A maestro has a vision of what a symphony should sound like. In a silent film how can one make the spectator see the sound? A vivid and noisy assemblage of archival and contemporary imagery meditating on the past and presence of film audio.

Jury Statement :
Tribute to Vivian Ostrovsky. With "Unsound" she is once again confirming her virtuosity in a montage of her memories and the history of cinema.
