Born in 1979 in Jakarta - Indonesia, Dimas Jayasrana is an activist in films. In 1999, he moved to Purwokerto, a small universitary city located in Central Java, where he took part to numerous cultural activist movements in different fields (theater, music, film…). In 2001, he founded there a group named “Youth Power” , which developed various cultural projects and actions, and initiated the “Indonesian Film Festival - Pesta Sinema Indonesia” in Purwokerto.
Back to Jakarta, Dimas Jayasrana lead film projects with Goethe Institut in Jakarta, “German Indonesian Film Award Winner” and film roadshow “Deutschland Gesehen Von”. From 2004 to 2006, Dimas Jayasrana developed then research and documentation on video and image in urban context in ruangrupa, the creative artist initiative based in Jakarta. He became the project officer of different visual art projects, like WA – a collaboration street mural painting project realised in 2005; and the managing director of a graphic designer company. Since 2006, Dimas Jayasrana is curator of “à courts d’écran” in CCF - French Cultural Centre in Jakarta, a program offering a regular space to French and Indonesian short movies. In the same time and in order to the network of film communities in Indonesia, Dimas Jayasrana is setting up a website presenting a database of all these communities.
New generation of Indonesian filmmaker was shaped by the changing of politic and technology in Indonesia. After the falling down of 2nd Indonesian president, Soeharto, in 1998, freedom of expression became the main issue at that time. Risen up of many society groups, including in art field, especially film, gave new spirit of changing. In the same time, digital technology was start penetrated in the middle of the euphoria.
As we can see today, many film group or collectives are active and digital video is one of the important ‘spare parts’ to make what we called new Indonesian cinemas. Further than that, video can be a tool for this young filmmaker to define themselves to their environment. This selection can give a big picture of it, especially at independent film scene.
Independent film scene is still on the move; to search and experiment themselves to find and define in concept and artistic ways how digital video can facilitate them to manifest their idea. If it’s a laboratories, then it have many possibilities to develop and that is why Indonesian short film can be something really exciting to follow.

The FISDN presents film secions focused on different countries and regions. This section intends to discover and explore different spaces and cultures with the aim to understand the specific regional, political and social circumstances, do reconstruct the emotional and intellectual spécificities of a special region or country. In this critical work we belief it's essencial to prefer films which rufuse, in its form and expression, the retake of sterotype ways of reality restituition. This refuse is an act of resistance against the actual period of "globalisation", which inclins to impose one dominating model of culture and habitutes..
