Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln KHM
The Academy of Media Arts (Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln — KHM) was founded in 1990. Study is centred on an integrated study programme, “Audiovisual Media”, which is run by the Academy’s four sections: Television and Film (tf), Media Design (md), Media Art (ma), and Art and Media Studies (ams). With an average of seventy seminars each semester, as well as praxis-oriented workshops on topical and classic themes, the Academy of Media Arts offers young media designers, artists, film- and television makers the widest range of study options in the field of audiovisual media in Europe.
The Academy of Media Arts brings together all those media that intersect in media praxis, but which are usually separated at other institutions of further education. Cooperation with other academies and universities in Germany and abroad, with cultural institutions, television organisations, and the media industry promotes this process of integration.
At the Academy of Media Arts, art, technology, and science work together. Different ways of thinking meet: theory encounters practical design, technological programmes and artistic imagination combine. This teaches students a sense of their social and political responsibility as artists, designers, directors, and authors who are engaged in the media.
In the study programme high priority is given to experimental creative praxis in conjunction with the acquisition of technical competence in the media. Work in the atelier, studio, and laboratory, together with the seminars, forms the curriculum’s centre of gravity. These diverse activities are accompanied by series of basic seminars and lectures on the historical and theoretical foundations of the audiovisual media. |
