EUROPE PREMIERE

Jane Topping
Great Britain
2018 | 00:18:00
Nou is the new video work by Jane Topping. Inspired by Scottish
socialist writer Naomi Mitchison’s Memoirs of a Spacewoman, nou is a
tale of space travel, hypnosis and transformation – across time and
space, from an alien world to a dentist's chair in Glasgow, 1981.
nou is the sequel to Peter (2014), which won Best PKD Short Film at
the Philip K. Dick Science Fiction Film Festival, New York, 2017.
Both videos use a recording of the artist as a child, being hypnotised
by her dentist, as a tool to move through time, speculating new
futures while conflating human and non-human bodies.

By and large humans tend to create narratives about themselves, then
often make great effort to conform reality to that narrative. This was
not a threat to planetary survival 10,000 years ago when we were
scattered in small bands worshipping local deities and relying on
nearby gathered foodstuffs with only stone tools. It is quite an other
thing when we are packed into mega-cities with nuclear weapons, and
ambiguous connectivities, along with relationships imbued in
instruments that far exceed an individual's capacity to fully
comprehend or to realibly navigate our various systems.

The section "Cinéma in Transgression" offers middle or feature lengh films out of norm and order, between fiction and documentary, characterised by complex audio-visual languages, unpredictable associations based on unconcient, metaphorical and metonymical proceedings. In this way these films can express the complexity of reality.
