State of Flux

*

Karine Laval
USA
2013 | 0:06:00

"For ""State of Flux"", Laval directed a professional dancer to perform underwater in a swimming pool, testing the body's resistance in an unfamiliar element and under challenging conditions, thus evoking man's struggle with nature and the uncertainty of the human experience. The film also explores the vagaries of subjective perception and challenges the way we see by combining performance and time and exposing the mechanics of vision: the original image was deconstructed into 3 monochromatic channels of respectively red, green and blue before being recomposed and layered slightly off-sync. Using water as an additional lens, Laval generates a non-narrative work rich in texture and surfaces evocative of sculptural forms that oscillate between representation and abstraction and blurs the boundaries between video, performance, sculpture and painting. "

Flux II

Albert Bayona
Spain
2014 | 0:08:50

Flux plays with the sensation of the coming and going flow of people and situations that are perpetually changing and in constant movement, dying and being born and finally becoming an endless cycle of transformations in a continuous movement of "eternal return". Music by Daniel Cabanzo.

A film centred around the use of colour in moving image technology, exploring the disorienting technicolour prismatic effects of the lamp house of a 35mm colour film printer. Through minute shifts across an abstract colour spectrum, punctuated by a mechanical soundtrack, the film evokes kaleidoscopic perceptual after-images.

A visual experiment in crowd-sourcing. Soft Pong Inari was made entirely from pre-existing photos of Fushimi Inari Shrine, available for modified re-use in the creative commons. The film explores how a multi-subjective viewpoint can express a sense of place. The soundtrack is by Michael Lyons and Palle Dahlstedt.

"Flipping" is an automatic animation created by applying 'flipping', a traditional hand-drawn animation technique. The spectrum of a soundless collision between cuts collides with the sound made by playing two improvised scores folded after burnt.

The Path of Water

The Path of Water
Chia-Horng Lin

This 3D animation consists of many metaphors within a variety of moving images. There is no solid storyline. The theme actually reflects my mental responses towards the world, conveying my value system throughout years of experiences. This work somehow implied that water has its own will, deciding where to flow regardless of any obstacle it may encounter. It will detour or penetrate in order to reach its destination. Pure, clean water seems to be mild, gentle, and harmless, yet its power cannot be underestimated. Throughout centuries, all life forms including human beings heavily rely on it in a very essential way. We don't seem to extol it in a decent manner. I mean water usually is regarded as a sporting role when it comes to art creation.

To see the Aurora Borealis was always on my bucket list. A little disappointed at first, I realized that most pictures we see of the Aurora Borealis are deceiving and that its true beauty is revealed only in long time exposure. After my first captures, I was drawn to it and the results of my sleepless nights can be seen in my film.

Dominigue T. Skoltz

2013 | 0:29:22

y2o navigates troubled waters, between suffocation and exaltation, between consummation and relinquishment, between yes and no, from both under the skin and on its surface. This work allows us to see a love on the verge of drifting, a multimorphic cell that is scattered in multiple scenes. Each of these scenes pummels emotional nodes, which are made and unmade by daily abrasions, observing the crossed polarities from which relentless loves are composed. In this elastic space-time, suspended outside the real, two inner worlds start to collide. If he feels something, she does not, and vice-versa until a void, where they feel nothing anymore, emptied by the force of their emotions. y2o finds its rhythm in the intimate, the treacherous territory where we unceasingly hesitate between what we conceal from the other’s gaze and what we choose to reveal. Either could lead us to lose our self. Either could lead us to find our self.
