Aus dem Auge
aus dem auge

Matthias Zuder
Germany, Austria
2013 | 0:10:30

A single corridor. Apparently neverending. "Aus dem Auge" is an aesthetical portrait about a forgotten place that reflects the dimension of fascistic madness. A cinematic metaphor of past, present and future.

Verity is fifteen. Her world is crumbling: her mother is ill, her home life a quiet prison of disarray. There is one thing that gets her through the silence of her home: a crush on an older boy from school (charismatic DYLAN). After school one day Dylan invites her along to hang out with him and his friends - a group of young people who are disarmingly inclusive, fervid in their friendliness. Initially excited by the vibrant group, Verity soon becomes overwhelmed. This is not the world that she's used to. These kids are part of a spiritual organisation. Their music is loud, their eagerness captivating. '
Youth' examines the complexities of an impressionable young person. Based on the writer's own experiences within a Pentecostal youth group. Verity’s journey is that of the spiritual colliding with the tactile world, as the music and atmosphere of the youth group lead her to a climactic, psychological battle. Examining obsession, persuasion and manipulation, this film delves into its themes using ambiguous, dream-like images and elements of the surreal.

In the early hours of a winter morning, Esme (13) arrives at St. Bartholomew’s hospital to see her sister CHLOE, interned with severe anorexia nervosa. A kindly nurse lets Esme in although it is well after hours, and the girls’ sleep-deprived and distracted mother leaves them alone. The only wish of her sister is to eat a peach, and Esme is going out in the night to look for it. After some unpleasant encounter she is helped out by a butcher who sees that she is upset and takes her under his wing. On the way, he explains and introduces her to the world of the meat market – an vibrant adult world: unsentimental, full of hard work and people getting their hands dirty, but also fascinating and nothing to be afraid of.

Washingtonia starts when the giraffes heart can no longer be heard. Washingtonia is an alternative name for Athens, a place where people, like animals, fall into summertime sadness because of the heat. Washingtonia is the only palm tree that its heart is not devoured by the red beetle. Because it's heart is small and dry and no one likes small and dry hearts.

This experimental film tests the edge between documentary and fiction through the combination of found and archive footage, and eccentric visual effects. Starting from a family insight it questions the relation between mystic and pragmatic. The intimate narration of the family story is framed with video recordings of Soviet TV hypnotists of late 1980s. Medical science as a cluster of assumptions and procedures is 'paired' with self-treatment and healing as a system of beliefs.
