The time stands still, the moments are everlasting. The nameless characters turn into numb figures, surfacing and disappearing like mental tatters. The protagonist is trapped and strays through a confusing construction of thoughts, finally losing herself

Traveling With Maxim Gorkiy

As in many cases, also here it's rather about allusion than description. This also applies to the persons represented. Flat silhouettes of people. Their heads depicted in profile. Faces with no expression, formal gestures. In the background, a little bit of everyday life: The hard, square, stone architecture arises from ocher-colored, brownish, blackish mush of color or mud. A demonstration of the function of the central perspective. An idealized representation of a tropical paradise. Strangely, there's no absurdity in this.

A short episode in the lives of two young strangers, whose paths in life randomly cross, like they do in everyones life, everyday, all around the world. The everlasting question of what could or would happen, if you decided to take action, change your planned route and just walk another way. The hopes, dreams and fears of young metropolitans being overwhelmed by the isolation of the masses and just wishing to not feel as alone as they do.

video of shadows

Karl F. Stewart
Germany
2013 | 0:07:00

An abstract portrait of the shadows - understood to include also our actions - which precede us and follow us through life. A reflection on a question I have been asking myself recently which is: are human beings, not just figuratively but literally, shadows here on Earth. The question comes from the consideration, that if shadows are used as a metaphor for human beings, are human beings a metaphor for something else? Are human beings cast back onto the Earth's surface as something else's shadow? If humanity is something else's reflection, then only when we learn to stop living in the limitation of shadows, we can hope that one day together we will shine.

Berlin. Grisha, a Russian-German boy, fools around with a wooden stick toygun. The longer he plays, the further he is thrust into an altered reality. The boundaries between the past and the present, the real and the surreal, start to blur. Images from bygone Berlin appear; streets and buildings still carry the memories of war. Suddenly, he is caught in a nightmare of another lifetime, nightmare that is still present today. “Come & Play” is a film about the memory of a place. Time does not disappear and the past does not go away. Everything coexists in one moment.

December 5th - 15th, 2014

The FISDN presents film secions focused on different countries and regions. This section intends to discover and explore different spaces and cultures with the aim to understand the specific regional, political and social circumstances, do reconstruct the emotional and intellectual spécificities of a special region or country. In this critical work we belief it's essencial to prefer films which rufuse, in its form and expression, the retake of sterotype ways of reality restituition. This refuse is an act of resistance against the actual period of "globalisation", which inclins to impose one dominating model of culture and habitutes.
