Fluorescent Sin
Fluorescent Sin

Amirah Tadjin

Kenya / Great Britain
2012 | 0:08:00

At Nairobi’s iconic central station, a lithe, majestic drag queen sits on a bench, lightly crying, smoking a cigarette and descending into a breakdown through a poetic soliloquy. The film challenges our ideas of beauty, sexuality, and Kenyan attitudes to ‘otherness’ in a film that suggests being caught between two places might in fact be no bad thing.

Yellow Fever
Yellow Fever

Ng'endo Mukii

Kenya / Great Britain
2012 | 0:07:00

An exploration of ‘feeling a little bit uncomfortable.’ I am interested in the concept of skin and race, and what they imply; in the ideas and theories sown into our flesh that change with the arc of time. In my film, I focus on African women’s self-image, through memories and interviews; using mixed media to describe our almost schizophrenic pursuit of globalised beauty.

2010 | 0:24:00

The film follows the tradition of the griot, using words/poetry, and music to deliver history – essentially the voice of the ancestors – in an effort to transfer knowledge and wisdom from past generations to those in the present... to learn from the experiences of those who came before you, and take those lessons with you as you march into the future; also, don’t completely lose yourself in the trappings that so-called modernity promises; there is some value to be gained from holding onto some traditions. – Tambay Obeson, Shadow and Act.

Somehow Different
Somehow Different

Nina Nordström
Finland, South Africa
2012 / 0:25:30

A few artists get together to organize a provocative performance to open up the eyes of their fellow citizens. They dress up as slaves with shackles, chains and an iron ball hanging from one of the artists ankle, and walk through Alexandra, a bad-reputed suburb of Johannesburg in the context of xenophobic violence. In Somehow Different we follow the artists' struggle to get all the aspects of the procession to fall in place.
These artists whom seem similar in the beginning turn out to have quite different views on the world and themselves, but at least they all have engaging stories to share.

10 - 20 Octobre 2013

We present film series focused on different countries and regions. This section intends to discover and explore different spaces and cultures with the aim to understand the specific regional, political and social circumstances, do reconstruct the emotional and intellectual spécificities of a special region or country. In this critical work we belief it's essencial to prefer films which rufuse, in its form and expression, the retake of sterotype ways of reality restituition, as an act of resistance in the actual period of "globalisation", which inclins to impose one dominating model of culture and habitutes..
