In a time where fake-news and lies are undermining the social fabric of our societies, the sceptical priest Filippo (Michele Riondino) is sent by the Vatican to investigate a supposed miracle. A video of a crying statue of the Virgin Mary went viral and Filippo, who is known for debunking many alleged miracles worldwide, has come to the border community in Limburg, in the South of the Netherlands, where four years ago, a boy shot and killed eleven of his schoolmates. He is staying in the house of the local priest (Raymond Thiry) and has to deal with the family who owns the crying statue and who also lost a child. The 19 year old daughter Térèse (Emma Bading) is an illusive mute young woman, who stopped speaking after the shooting and sees the arrival of Filippo as a sign from above. She and her manipulative mother (Marie Louise Stheins) prove to be worthy opponents for Filippo. He is used to interrogating people and doing forensic research, but his technocratic approach clashes with the profound grief of the people in the village. And he seems attracted by the mysterious Térèse. As he gets closer to a resolution of the case, he also gets entangled in the village’s grief and a series of apparently miraculous events, that bring down his certainties about his calling as a priest and as human being.
