Au plus profond de la brousse, serpente une longue caravane de zébus. Lancés dans une transhumance de plusieurs mois, quatre jeunes garçons: Ama, Ousséni, Hassan et Lela ont quitté leur famille, décidés à offrir de meilleures pâtures à leur troupeau . Guidés par ces enfants, nous vivons un voyage diurne dans les paysages du Burkina Faso, puis, lorsque tombe la nuit, nous partageons les peurs et les désirs de ces enfants Peulhs. Le film nous propose alors un second voyage, plus sédentaire, celui des jeunes filles restées au village. Sans pudeur, nous vivons les rites qui jalonnent leur jeunesse jusqu’à leur maturité. Auprès de cette famille Peulh, nous découvrons leurs gestes quotidiens, leurs caractères et leurs croyances, nous explorons au plus proche ce mode de vie unique, pastoral et nomade.

His time at the hospital is running out and Muhi now faces the most critical choices of his life.

C'est avec joie que j'ai reçu cette semaine ces deux prix – Night Awards – pour mon film Les Eternels, aux 16. Festivals Zeichen der Nacht (Berlin) et Segni della Notte (Urbino).
Il se fait que je suis au Haut-Karabagh en ce moment – où j'ai tourné Les Eternels -, et c'est avec tous ceux qui ont contribué à ce film que je vais partager ces reconnaissances.
La réalisation de ce film, je l'ai conçue, durant trois années, comme une expérience de vie à part entière. Non pas à partir d'un sujet ou d'un simple désir d'une recherche formelle, mais dans un souhait de brasser des forces pour explorer des parties de l'humain qui ne se donnent à voir et à partager que par l'entremise du cinéma. Je crois profondément à l'acte de création comme possibilité de faire émerger un sens nouveau sur le monde qui nous entoure, et au cinéma en particulier comme ressourcement du sensible qui réside en chacun de nous. Ce film est davantage qu'un documentaire sur la guerre qui se déroule au Haut-Karabagh et sur la mélancolie d'éternité. En faisant le choix de filmer à partir d'un angle mort de l'histoire – des champs de ruines, des tranchées en première ligne de combats, en présence de personnes qui ont survécu aux violences de la guerre -, j'ai essayé de redonner une présence, un corps, un visage, à des gens qui ont été oublié, qui sont là et qu'on ne voit plus. Ils sont pourtant des survivants. Ils sont encore debout et résistent. Ils nous donnent à réfléchir je crois sur la condition humaine.
Chaque personnage dans ce film est habité par la mélancolie d'éternité et y apparaît tel qu'il est dans le quotidien. En même temps, parce que le cinéma est une expérience de la transformation, de la transgression – en ce sens il est hérétique -, chacun d'eux s'approche et fraye avec des limites, celles de leurs propres blessures, pour nous instruire sur la déraison des hommes et du monde.
En ce sens, Les Eternels est un labyrinthe dans lequel il faut pouvoir se perdre pour faire résonner en nous des parties cachées de nous-mêmes.

We live in a world of screens. More of us would know this, if we look up, and look around. The screens are everywhere, pervasive: Fingers that are glued to the screen which are glued to the eyes which are glued to the screen. We use them for work, play. But it’s much more than that. The screens use us, too. How did we get here? And where’s this journey leading us? What does that even look like? And is it what we want? Is this culture’s technology changing us and our societies for the better? Does it empower all of us—like it claims to—or does it only empower a select few at the expense of the many? What’s the price we pay to live in this pervasive electronic world? This era is unprecedented, and perhaps never before has technology been so prolific and shaped our lives so intimately. But there’s a dark side we don’t talk about. Why is that? Is it because we’re too busy being glued to the screen? Why do we shy away from questions about our collective addiction? What’s lurking under the surface? Could it be that with this era, the stakes have also never been so high that we’ve got it all wrong?

"I'm 16 and I've already been through 3 wars." Farah Baker, a young Palestinian, denounced in a tweet followed by 70 000 people, the situation of Gazans under the Israeli blockade. Summer 2014, shocked by her tweet and by the war on Gaza, I took my camera and encountered Palestinians in Bethlehem before, during and after the war on Gaza. Through an artist, a banker, a florist, a woman race driver, a woman mayor - We discover how they are affected by this conflict in their daily life and how they rebuild their society despite the oppression.

Still Alive
A rebel Muslim Sister forced into exile, an activist who discovers maternity and feels muzzled, a laic artist totally devoted to the revolutionary cause and a Coptic Christian who questions opinions he was being dictated since ever. Still Alive tells the story of four young Egyptians – Eman, Soleyfa, Ammar and Kirilos – from the revolution of January 2011 until the 5th anniversary of the uprising, in January 2016. Over those five years, their lives have been deeply turned upside down. They have evolved, been through crises, and had to face decisive choices, not necessarily in line with their original ideals. The four of them take a look at their own past, their own image, and share their feelings about their current situation. Still Alive is a movie about the passing of time and scattering ideals, in a context of violent repression and nationalist propaganda. What life could be like, in Marshal Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s military regime, after this unprecedented momentum of freedom? What does existence mean, amid such economic turmoil? What legacy – or burden – to carry on for this youth who was at the forefront of the revolt?
