Journey to Aleppo
Journey to Aleppo

Juuso Lavonen
Finland
2016 / 0:23:00

The documentary tells a story of Syrian born Finnish citizen Rami Adham who delivers humanitarian aid to the children of the world’s most dangerous city. Adham travels many times in a year to the war zone in Aleppo and delivers medicine, food and donated toys from Finland to orphans. The war in Syria has caused an humanitarian catastrophe to the nation and we can see this throughout the documentary from the streets of Aleppo. Allthough most of civilians have fled Aleppo, to the Turkish side or as refugees to Europe some are still hanging on in the city ruins. There are still about half million people living in Aleppo. Adham and his organization gives aid to 350 orphans who have lost their parents due to war. Documentary is harsh reminder that war spares no one and the civilians especially the children suffer the most. Documentary follows Adham’s preparation to one of these trips and we hear his thoughts about the conflict and the importance of giving aid to the children of Syria. We travel through the old city of Aleppo which has turned in to a warzone where only a handful of journalists have been able to go. History of the old city goes as far back as 3000 years. We follow Adham as he walks besides the main mosque in the square where merchants sold tourists cooked corn, souvenirs and where people took daily strolls. Now the square is only an echo of it’s past as it is completely destroyed and snipers are stalking in the shadows. By delivering aid Adham brings hope to the orphans and a feeling that they are cared for. In Adham’s opinion this is the only way Syria has a future – by giving hope that there might be a better tomorrow. Only by helping now Syria could be rebuilt someday. Documentary shows that civilians in Syria are in danger everyday and the panic is real. Only thing reminding of a normal childhood for an orphan might be the stuffed animal.

Corteza

Paloma Rincón
Columbia
2016 / 0:15:00

Corteza is the contemplation of a naked body, transformed by the disease and the pass of years, that suggests old age as the transition to another reality. Lilia is 71 years old and Alzheimer’s disease has transformed her mind and body. Her world is full of noises and whispers. Sometimes thoughts come out from her mouth and reveal a disturbed reality. Corteza is a short film that describes this woman’s bath routine. Submerged in a bathtub, Lilia lets her body lie there, while an imposing black woman is in charge of rinse her, rub her...accompany her and contemplate her. Arms, legs, skin, bones. This is the inventory of a body that consumes itself. A body that inhabits another world and another time.

October 1 - 9, 2016

An international jury overview the sections of short films coming from all over the world. We prefer documentaries which succeed in representing the complexity of reality and discover in a new way its sensible and perturbing aspects on the same time accentuating the ambivalent and enigmatic status of reality in avoiding sterotypes and simplifing conclusions.
